Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine: Maintaining Balance
by Daniel Nemer, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl.Ac
Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist

The Human body is made up of many systems that maintain and promote health. These systems include the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, endocrine system, circulatory system, digestive system, and others. Each of these systems plays an important role in your health, and your doctor will certainly evaluate one or many of these systems to guide your treatment plan.

But none of these systems is designed to function independently in the body. All these systems are in fact exquisitely coordinated to interact together with perfect function and timing.  When these systems are working together the result is vibrant health. Consequently, if any of these systems isn’t working well and coordinated with the rest of the body the result is often poor health, disease, or even death. The overall health of these systems is dependent upon balance or homeostasis.

While we can look at any one system in the body as we might look at the various instruments that make up an orchestra, it is the conductor that enables the systems to work together. Acupuncture meridians are channels of energy that serve as conductors by coordinating individual and group body systems through the movement of energetic information. In fact, these channels literally conduct energy on the surface of the skin which can be measured with special electrical equipment.

Advanced Acupuncture Diagnosis and Treatment:

Acugraph technology uses a small electrical probe connected to a computer to measure electrical resistance at specific points on the hands and feet. With these measurements the system evaluates and analyzes how each individual meridian is performing compared to the others. The findings are then summarized in different charts and treatments are offered to correct the imbalances found.

Acupuncture treatment may then be performed in a variety of ways, including massage or acupressure, small electrical current, laser light, and needles. Some patients fear acupuncture needles based upon their experience of injections or blood donation, but acupuncture needles are completely different. Acupuncture needles are almost as thin as a human hair, and the experience most often described as not painful, or even very relaxing. Additionally, needles are sterile, disposable, and only used once. If you are uncomfortable with needles there are non-needling options.

Acupuncture has an outstanding safety record with a very low incidence of side effects. An average course of treatment is 6-12 sessions. Check your insurance plan as it may be covered.
