Acupuncture for Weight Loss

Acupuncture for Weight LossImportant: Acupuncture is not a quick fix for weight loss. Acupuncture helps regulate metabolism and appetite. It’s a steady path toward optimal health!

A patient’s first visit to the Acupuncturist’s office will include an exam and interview. Pulse and tongue coating are both examined carefully to discern the patient’s health. Oriental Medicine seeks to bring balance and harmony to the patient’s body and soul. Practitioners thus do not treat one symptom in isolation. Instead, an Acupuncturist will treat the person, factoring in issues such as family history, diet and lifestyle choices, stresses the patient may be under, mental state, and a few other factors.

The resulting prescription will include acupuncture. Specifically, needles inserted under the skin of the ear and taped in place will likely be left in for a week. Other needling work will likely follow in future sessions, focusing on different organs, like the thyroid to enhance metabolism or the kidney to address water retention and hormonal imbalances. The patient will also be encouraged to watch caloric intake, eat less processed foods, and consume more fresh fruits and vegetables. If stress is an overeating trigger, as often is, the Acupuncturist will help the patient confront that stress through meditation, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Acupuncture in general is known to have a calming effect on patients.

How does acupuncture work? Oriental Medicine practitioners believe the body has over 2000 acupoints along meridians (Chanel of energy). These points resonate to various organs in the body, many being “distal” or some distance away from the corresponding organs. Sometimes these points are blocked, leading to what Acupuncturists call “stagnant Qi” (energy.) Needles are inserted and manipulated to strengthen or equalize energy and blood going to that organ. This allows energy to flow freely so the body can heal and regulate itself.
